Chief Estimator

Direct Hire

Concord, California

$195,000 - $250,000 

Taking on the position of Chief Estimator means taking full ownership of the estimating department's operations. Your role involves overseeing every aspect, from establishing and upholding processes to guiding a team of skilled estimators and devising innovative strategies to secure competitive bids.

Key Responsibilities:

Department Leadership:

  • Establish, maintain, and enforce estimating processes.
  • Guide and mentor the estimating team, fostering collaboration and managing individual performance.
  • Coordinate with other company departments to streamline operations.
  • Administer estimating functions, including identifying projects, scheduling staff, and contributing to winning strategies.
Strategic Oversight:
  • Lead decision-making and implement value engineering strategies.
  • Manage the company's bid schedule, coordinating workload to prioritize resources.
  • Review all bid costs and negotiate with contractors and suppliers.
  • Collaborate with finance and heavy shop departments to establish accurate bidding costs.
Talent Development:
  • Recruit, train, and retain estimating staff.
  • Promote employee development and cross-training for a versatile team.
Risk Management:
  • Analyze bidding risks and develop competitive strategies.
  • Evaluate major takeoff risks and implement solutions.
  • Mitigate risk for the company based on contract language or operational requirements.
Estimating & Bidding:
  • Prepare comprehensive bid packages for complex projects.
  • Understand general expenses and finalize bid costs.
  • Analyze data for accurate project cost estimation.
  • Review drawings, specifications, and site conditions for quality bids.
  • Ensure timely bid submissions and compliance with requirements.
Qualifications:
  • 10-15 years of experience in Construction Estimation or related fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare accurate and competitive bids.
  • Strong understanding of heavy civil construction materials, methods, and costs.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency in construction estimating software.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Thorough comprehension of relevant drawings and specifications.
  • Valid US driver's license and willingness to travel as required.
