Title: Mobile Engineer (Android)
Duration: 8 months +

Rate: DOE (Depends On Experience)

Candidate will provide software development services for the creation of an Android application:

  • Support application design efforts
  • Create Android application under direction of employees
  • Perform unit test validation through use of manual and/or automated tools
  • Provide troubleshooting support as needed + Identify and correct deficiencies in code
  • Perform code reviews
  • Checkpoint software frequently via GitHub
  • Use JIRA to ensure proper communications and procedures are followed

The Mobile Engineer (Android) position works with members of the mobile development team to produce mobile applications that support the business goals of our client. The Mobile Engineer is expected to take the lead on a small to mid-sized project, ensuring that the entire application is both functional and performs well.  The Mobile Engineer is responsible for the program architecture of the projects assigned, and thus must not only be a skilled coder, but must be able to maintain a vision of the application as a whole. 
 
Critical Functions:
 
Builds competitive dynamic mobile applications leveraging defined infrastructure and application patterns while improving time to market and increasing quality.
 
Leads a project team of Engineers through development phases, utilizing a combination of in-house and vendor teams.  Sets and oversees project team strategy and steers creation and delivery of mobile applications.
 
Coordinates best development approach with Architects, Engineers, Database Developers, User Experience Designers and others.  Ensure relevant technical decisions area documented, organized and consistent across projects. 
 
Mentor to new or less seasoned Mobile Engineers.  Works closely with Platform Architects to ensure consistency and interoperability across projects and identify and define new best practices.   Drives best practices throughout the Engineering team.  
 
Works with editorial, management staff, and customers to determine the technical and business requirements for an application.
 
Provide continuous production support during the life of an application.

  • Stays current on mobile engineering techniques and software
  • Plan, document and execute the deployment of applications to various environments
  • Provide solicited and unsolicited feedback around the continuous improvement of the development process
  • Participates in a troubleshooting team in after-hours situations for critical production related issues
  • Researches engineering trends, help implement new approaches within the engineering department
  • Cross disciplinary understanding of mobile application design, web design, instructional design and quality assurance
  • Builds cutting-edge solutions using the latest technologies

Responsible for implementing proper coding techniques to ensure applications perform as expected, scale under load, and can be maintained by him/herself or others. Also responsible for identifying and quickly resolving any issues reported by customers.
 
Our Client produces web applications for sale. Mobile applications are an adjunct product to these web applications. The successful and timely completion of mobile applications directly affects the ability to generate revenue from these online products (Revenue expectations of supported product lines:  $500 million +)

Furthermore, the adoption of large textbook programs increasingly depends on the ability to provide competitive, industry leading technology components. In this capacity, the products this position helps to develop supports revenue and empowers users. 

A successful candidate may have:

  • Minimum 5 years professional software development experience and must possess a high comfort level with object oriented technologies
  • Minimum 3 years in mobile application development with Android APIs and Frameworks
  • Must have strong understanding of Android OS, Android SDK, Java
  • Must have strong understanding of the Android Studio developer tool chain
  • Understanding of the nuances of fragments and Android XML layouts, and how to create adaptive interfaces that work for multiple device form factors
  • Extensive hands-on experience creating custom UI controls, consuming RESTful APIs, designing protocols, implementing delegate interfaces, animations, and performance optimization
  • Focus on high standards and thorough development, testing and delivering high-quality products
  • Experience with client side technologies such as CSS and Javascript
  • Knowledge of other languages like C, C++
  • Strong software design skills and experience with proven design and architecture patterns
  • Ability to consume specifications, give feedback, provide estimates and translate into implementation
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members
  • Good knowledge of API development
  • Experience in programming with external API services including XML / JSON
  • Able to research and solve problems on his/her own using Google, newsgroups, vendor support and other external resources
  • Strong ability to communicate with technical and non-technical audiences in both written and verbal forms
  • Comfortable representing application development interests in cross-departmental meetings and brainstorms
  • Must be proactive and willing to identify opportunities for improvement, propose solutions and see them through to completion
  • One or more apps in the Android Marketplace
  • Education: B.S. in Computer Science preferred or equivalent experience

Like all computer programming, this activity is almost entirely problem solving.  Mobile Engineers are responsible for applying computer science concepts to the design of the underlying architecture of mobile applications, and as such they must determine the set of data structures that will best suit the expression of the real world problem being addressed in code.  In addition they provide assistance and training to other mobile engineers in debugging and other problematic coding situations. Lastly, the Mobile Engineer, due to his/her level of experience, will help establish best practices and develop reusable code libraries to increase the efficiency of the department overall.
