Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Structural Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will evaluate existing buildings and design solutions to address complex problems for our clients. The projects will cover a wide range of building types, including residential, multi-family, commercial, and some industrial structures. The primary focus will be on the repair of damage from fire, wind, flood, and impacts, as well as adaptive reuse of older buildings. Additionally, you will be involved in enhancing existing facilities to accommodate changes in use and the implementation of equipment and machinery. There may also be opportunities for structural design in commercial, retail, industrial, and hospitality sectors.
Essential Job Functions:
- Prepare as-built drawings from existing buildings.
- Evaluate structural systems in existing, sometimes damaged, buildings.
- Create required drawings and specifications in compliance with building codes and industry standards.
- Research historical and current building codes and identify relevant code upgrades.
- Conduct field assessments, which may include working from ladders, lifts, scaffolds, confined spaces, and rooftops.
- Perform investigations and condition assessments to determine the necessary repairs for damaged or poorly performing structural systems.
- Complete design assignments related to the upgrade, maintenance, and restoration of existing buildings.
- Lead project teams, ensuring successful completion of scope, schedule, and budget.
- Provide technical insights and participate in client meetings as a subject matter expert in collaboration with the Business Development team.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Certifications:
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license in Civil Engineering required; Structural license preferred.
- 8+ years of experience in structural design.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD required; Building Information Modeling (BIM) proficiency is a plus.
- A valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of commercial and residential building structural systems and the best material choices based on building type, location, and usage.
- Ability to determine load calculations, performance criteria, and material/member selection.
- Strong report writing skills, with the ability to develop and manage budgets, scopes, and deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with staff, clients, and property owners.
- Experience managing projects and teams in both new and existing construction, ensuring quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC).
- Proven ability to handle multiple deadlines and prepare technical condition reports, repair designs, bid documents, addenda, change orders, and other construction documentation.
- Skilled in budget and schedule management, with the ability to communicate effectively with clients (internal and external) and work with teams to complete projects on time and within budget.
- Ability to build and maintain strong client relationships.
- Strong independent working skills, with sound judgment and critical thinking abilities.
- Ability to perform well under pressure and meet deadlines.
