Senior Desktop Engineering Manager
We are seeking a delivery-oriented Senior Desktop Engineering Manager responsible for overseeing and managing the internal user experience on Windows, Mac OS platforms, and VDI environments. This role involves active management of a technology program and/or practice area, generally reporting to senior leadership.
Essential Job Functions
Delivery:
- Manage, monitor, and report on the services and service levels required to support and deliver an exceptional end-user desktop environment.
- Oversee executive support, including "White Glove " service.
- Certify hardware across desktop environments and in-office devices (e.g., monitors, docking stations).
- Lead and manage teams to deliver high-quality software products on a predictable schedule.
- Coordinate with internal and external partners.
- Manage financial and budget activities related to desktop engineering.
Technical and Strategy:
- Define, communicate, and execute the strategy for end-user experiences, including target customer segments, prioritization, and approach.
- Document end-user policies and processes.
- Evaluate and pilot new products for Desktop Experience (DEX), Unified Workspace Management (UWM), IT Asset Management (ITAM), etc.
- Ensure technical integrity, compliance, and alignment with the overall technology strategy.
- Use advanced engineering practices and data-driven decisions to improve operational efficiency, time to value, and product quality.
- Contribute to the development of a flexible technical vision and roadmap within the scope of your team(s).
Communication and Collaboration:
- Plan and coordinate activities such as installation and upgrading of hardware and software.
- Interface with helpdesk support to ensure customer needs are prioritized.
- Collaborate with product teams to prioritize and groom the backlog.
- Establish credibility as an engineer, coach, and leader to foster collaboration.
- Influence and contribute to cross-organization and cross-product initiatives.
- Provide clear and timely communication with stakeholders to manage risks, issues, and changes.
Team Building:
- Build and develop high-performing, self-organizing engineering teams.
- Manage staff performance, training, mentoring, and recruitment.
- Foster a culture of feedback and continuous improvement within the team(s).
- Oversee technicians to resolve end-user issues.
Skills
- Experience with MECM/SCCM, Intune, JAMF, and DEM tooling (e.g., Aternity).
- Experience administering VDI environments such as Citrix.
- Knowledge of Windows and Mac OS imaging, patching, and software packaging.
- Expertise in advanced scripting and automation techniques.
- Extensive experience in technology strategy, software, operations, security, compliance, and performance optimization.
- Strong ability to influence decisions, build consensus, and communicate effectively.
- Familiarity with change management principles and the ability to rapidly learn new skills.
Education/Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related discipline, with at least 7 years of related experience or equivalent training/work experience.
- Minimum of 3 years as a technical engineering manager.
- 7+ years of experience in end-user hardware standards and desktop architecture.
- 3+ years of experience in end-user software lifecycle management.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in computer science or a related discipline.
