Senior Systems Engineer
Senior Systems Engineer
The Senior Systems Engineer will be tasked with overseeing the testing, upkeep, and support of all production, development, and test environments. This includes a mix of both Microsoft and Linux servers, as well as infrastructure components like Active Directory (both local and cloud-based), multi-domain file replication, and SQL clustering. The role also requires automating server maintenance tasks and ensuring that security patching is consistently applied through scripting.
This position involves researching and implementing new technologies from cloud providers like Microsoft and AWS. The Senior Systems Engineer will also manage various business applications, both on-premises and cloud-based, while handling tasks related to directory services, advanced file system permissions, and other IT-related responsibilities.
The role demands strong troubleshooting capabilities across a wide range of server environments, with a focus on minimizing downtime and ensuring quick issue resolution.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee installation and maintenance of server operating systems, utilizing automation tools to ensure server consistency and health.
- Implement and maintain SAN storage, hyper-converged infrastructure, and virtualization platforms such as Nutanix.
- Monitor overall security within the server environment and apply appropriate measures for maintenance.
- Provide support for new application rollouts and technology launches within the business.
- Regularly review system logs, including those from Active Directory and other critical servers, to ensure smooth operation.
- Set up and maintain RADIUS, NPS servers, and manage Certificate Authorities.
- Ensure high system availability, including Active Directory, file servers, and management of file system permissions.
- Leverage in-depth knowledge of Microsoft 365 and Azure Active Directory.
- Manage and implement automated patching processes.
- Create and configure GPOs, DNS records, DHCP scopes, and network VLANs.
- Understand and manage infrastructure in Azure and AWS environments.
- Set up and maintain backup solutions, both on-premise and cloud-based, including database backups.
- Be available for after-hours support, including weekends and holidays, to meet business requirements.
- Participate in an on-call support rotation.
- Effectively prioritize and manage projects to ensure deadlines are met.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- At least 8 years of experience in systems engineering or a related field.
- Over 6 years of experience managing Windows servers and workstations.
- Strong background in various backup technologies, with a minimum of 6 years of experience.
- More than 5 years of experience in endpoint protection software.
- Microsoft and virtualization certifications preferred.
Skills and Expertise
- Expertise in managing NTFS file permissions and Microsoft Exchange Online.
- Strong understanding of automated patch management using tools such as SCCM or similar platforms.
- Advanced knowledge of remote desktop technologies (RDP), Citrix, VDI, and application publishing.
- Hands-on experience with virtual server environments such as VMware or Nutanix.
- Familiarity with IPv4 addressing and subnetting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Visio.
- Strong leadership capabilities to mentor and support junior team members.
- Exceptional organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to handle conflict and solve problems efficiently, with a customer-centric mindset.
- Willingness to work outside of standard hours and to travel up to 10% as needed.
