Software Dev Engineer 2(Software Dev& Data Science in Machine Learning)

Lehi, Utah

12-24 month contract

FamilySearch is seeking a Contractor Software Developer 3. This unique position will have the opportunity to bless the lives of literally millions of our Heavenly Father's children by helping them find their ancestors in thebillionsof currently un-indexed document images on FamilySearch's site. Even at the Church, there are few jobs with such a huge potential for positive impact!This person will be responsible for improving FamilySearch's handwriting recognition, OCR, and NLP (natural language processing) production systems using Machine Learning and Data Science. This individual works with divine guidance to provide or support technology that furthers the mission of the Church and reflects the eternal impact of the gospel.


  • Lead one or more teams in the design and development of assigned software development tasks
  • Work with the technical lead in the establishment of architectures, standards, and best practices
  • As a member of a software engineering team, participate in team meetings, team planning sessions, setting team goals, and all other team activities
  • Estimate the time to develop and deliver features as defined by product management
  • Participate in peer reviews of project software design and coding
  • Develop source code and unit tests according to technical designs
  • Self-directed and can provide classroom instruction in the areas of Church software development processes, industry best practices, and new technologies being adopted for the organization
  • Provide formal training, mentoring, or pair programming with other less experienced engineers



  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience

Work Experience:

  • 2 years of progressive and relevant professional experience

Required Skills:

Data Science:

  • Enjoys spending most of their time in data analysis tasks
  • Ability to find patterns in Machine Learning output that can be used to improve Machine Learning capability
  • Ability to use data to drive machine learning improvement decisions
  • Ability to collect and curate training and test data to improve Machine Learning capability
  • Ability to provide clear communication and visualization of data
  • Understanding of applied mathematics, statistics, and probability
  • Mastery of essential data manipulation tools like sed, grep, sort, regexes, etc.

Machine Learning:

  • Familiarity with common Machine Learning frameworks including TensorFlow and Keras
  • Experience with machine learning including:
    • Data collection, annotation, and verification
    • Machine Learning dataset management
    • Evaluation and improving Machine Learning models through the use of training data and data analysis

Domain knowledge:

  • Interest in foreign languages and scripts
  • Passion for Family History

Software Engineering:

  • Computer Science and programming fundamentals
  • Java and Python programming ability
  • Ability to direct the work in defining logic and algorithms to create programming solutions and designing modules and implementing them within the overall architecture.
  • Must have significant engineering experience (multiple major releases) in the primary areas of an n-tier enterprise system, e.g. interface, domain logic and database layers.
  • Must have expert-level skills in engineering/programming, analytical/diagnostic/troubleshooting, web technology, and programming methodology
  • Must be able to architect entire systems and subsystems

Bonus Skills:

  • Fluency in at least one non-English language a plus
  • Paleography (transcription of historical scripts) experience a plus
