Job Description:

Successful candidates will have a strong aptitude to work cross-functionally with engineering and contractor teams to further the development of telescopic optical systems. The Sr. Optical Engineer is integral to the refinement, maintenance, and documentation of optical designs, prescriptions, sensitivities, and tolerancing for primary subsystems.
 
This role will pioneer the maturation of optical systems from design to fabrication and implementation. Is responsible to identify and develop requirements/make changes as necessary by locating issues and promoting solutions throughout the alignment system sensitivity and performance budgets.
 
All work will be documented at a high level to be used in writing programmatic and technical reports, which will be presented in front of cross-divisional teams.
 
Required Skills:

  • Master’s degree in Optics, Physics, Engineering, or equivalent technical discipline
    • A combination of Bachelor’s degree and work experience will be considered in lieu of a Master’s degree
  • 10+ years of experience with the design, analysis, and development of large optical systems
  • Knowledge and experience in developing and performing subsystem and system level optical integration, optical alignment and optical testing
  • Knowledge and hands on experience with interferometric and profilometer optical testing, laser trackers, and other optical testing and alignment tools and techniques
  • Experienced user of ZEMAX, Code V, or similar optical design and analysis software tools.
  • Knowledge and experience with stray light analysis and mitigation and analysis tools such as Jenny, FRED, ASAP, or similar
  • Experience developing design requirements and interfaces for telescope optical subsystems, preparation of interface control documents and defining tolerances for manufacturing and alignment budgets
  • Experience with EVMS cost and schedule processes for developing and maintaining work breakdown structures, cost estimates, budgets, and schedules
Bonus/Soft Skills:
  • PhD in Optics, Physics, Engineering, or equivalent technical discipline
  • Knowledge and experience with Zernike polynomials
  • Experience designing, developing, and managing optical tests for large telescopes
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
