Telescope Structures Manager
Relocation offered for the right candidate
Direct Hire

Successful candidate will be responsible for supervising the staff including conducting yearly performance evaluations and being proactive in the staff's career development. Provide high level management and oversight of the Mount Stage 2 design-build contract. Supervising external consultants who provide engineering support services. Recruiting additional members of the TS Element, if needed and subject to availability of funds. Planning the TS Element scope, schedule and budget and participating in project management reviews. Executing the TS plan using Earned Value Management techniques. Developing and being responsible for managing TS risks in the Project Risk Register. Representing the TS Element at major project technical and programmatic reviews. Participating in the procurement process for engineering services and participation in the selection process and monitoring of work. Assisting with the oversight of relevant contracts being managed by other project Elements. Assisting with companies Project's AIV&C planning. Participating in developing technical reports to document the design and performance of companies Mount. Preparing and delivering presentations at technical reviews and conferences

Required Skills:
  • BS degree in Physics, Engineering, or equivalent discipline.
  • 10 years of post-degree experience and high-level expertise in the design, fabrication, assembly, integration, and test of ground-based, space-based, or airborne telescopes and instrumentation.
  • At least 5 years of experience with technical contract management for contracts exceeding $10M including risk management and preparation of bid packages, statements of work, and test plans.
  • At least 5 years of experience supervising technical teams.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to foreign and domestic vendor, partner, and observatory locations as the need arises.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
Preferred/Bonus Skills:
  • MS or PhD degree in Physics, Engineering, or equivalent discipline.
  • 10 years of post-degree experience and high level expertise in the design, fabrication, assembly, integration, and alignment of large (50-500 tons) motion-controlled structures; at least 5 years of experience with large (10-50 m) ground-based antennas and/or telescopes is strongly preferred.
  • High-level expertise with optical/optomechanical systems.
  • Experience using Earned Value Management techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with structural engineering, FEA analysis, materials engineering, design codes, quality assurance and safety processes and practices.
