The Software Development Manager will be a passionate leader and technologist with deep interest for technology and the creation of new solutions to address the constant needs of our business and keep company as a preferred leader within the industry. The Development Manager you will have the opportunity to change how we deliver technology solutions with large scale budgets and serve as the cornerstone of development team and strategies.

  • The successful candidate will be responsible for application development life cycle from requirements gathering to implementation.
  • Responsible for systems design, technical architecture, code review, technical standards and delivery for the target solutions. The right candidate will significantly evolve the capabilities of the organization and cultivate an environment of perpetual innovation and transformation in how we do business. The complexity and criticality of this work requires an individual who brings application development & delivery experience, an understanding of technical trends and new innovation, technical expertise in digital/automation engineering, senior leadership, influence and execution skills to the role.
  • Directs work of the development team; drives all development activities; influences the technology decisions for complex products. Oversees the gathering of functional requirements, the validation of the requirements with the business, and technical specifications for the developers. Responsible for defining non-functional requirements, including cloud-hosted applications. Accountable for end results being accepted.
  • Directs development team's standards and best practices; helps define check-in policies, repository and branch strategies, and Develops across multiple products.
  • Approves and accepts the deliverables released by development teams; Ensures timeliness and adherence to agreed deliverables; Provides direction for ongoing maintenance and support of existing tools; Oversees support processes carried out by off-site teams by ensuring the allocation of proper resources and educating support teams as needed.
  • Communicates with business leaders and members of the IT team.
  • Supervises team members (including globally dispersed resources) and the development team members; Hire, onboard and train new staff members. Mentor and grow existing staff members for their career progression.

Qualifications and Education/Experience Requirements

  • A degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or similar technical subject
  • 15 + years of experience in Technology; Experience with reinsurance is preferred.
  • Exposure to at least one of the major Catastrophe modelling systems from RMS, AIR or CoreLogic, although not essential
  • Ideally, exposure to Solvency II, although not essential
  • General understanding of Insurance principles and concepts
  • Knowledge of several programming languages would be a plus.
  • Knowledge of web development fundamentals expected.
  • Must be comfortable working in a different environment and using open source tools
  • Proven ability to establish relationships with key stakeholders and lead and influence to accomplish business objectives
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong change management skills

Additional Qualifications

  • MUST be organized and have a strong ability to focus on and pay strict attention to detail.
  • Strong analytic skills for constant review of complex code, data, and scientific information.
  • Thorough knowledge of insurance/reinsurance concepts.
  • Thorough knowledge of programming concepts.
  • Solid ability to prioritize workload according to volume, urgency, etc
  • Strong verbal and writing skills for internal communications
  • High degree of initiative to take lead role and manager the team work to completion.
  • Ability to find creative solutions to new problems as they arise.
  • Strong ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to work with the team in manager's absence without direction.
